The
kitchen – my stage
The entertainer
in me is wide awake. I like entertaining people, and I love the
spotlight. The kitchen has proven to be the perfect stage for two
of my great passions: cooking and entertainment.
After passing my Abitur, Germany's college entrance exam, I initially
pursued my dream of acting and tried for several years to establish
myself in theater. Sometimes things don't turn out the way we hope,
and I never managed to make my breakthrough there. Yet oddly enough,
I did end up making it onto the big stage. 600 episodes of morning
television, from Kochen bei Kerner to Lanz kocht, die Küchenschlacht,
and… and… and… cooking enjoys quite the cult following,
now more than ever. You can see it in the media. I'm always glad
for these opportunities, and not just because I enjoy standing in
front of the camera. It also provides a terrific stage for my craft,
to a public of millions. We cooks can't do much to stop our restless
culture's trend toward fast-food and pre-packaged meals, but we
can use our media presence to wave the banner before our viewers
for food as a craft of passion and brains, to make it palatable
in the truest sense of the word. Our cooking artistry takes its
essential meaning for the culture of a country, and the many joys
that it holds for us can be enjoyed live with an interested public
here as well.
